Bay of Plenty

Challenge

  • In 2011, MV Rena ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef in the Bay of Plenty, spilling its containers and 1700 tonnes of heavy fuel.
  • It was the worst maritime environmental disaster in New Zealand.
  • There are seven reefs in the Bay of Plenty and the New Zealand Government needed to ensure such an incident would never be repeated.

Solution

  • Guardian was chosen to mark all seven reefs in the Bay of Plenty.
  • The solution employed virtual AIS buoys to comprehensively mark the reefs for vessels to see on their navigation systems.

Benefits

  • Vesper Marine’s solution provides complete visibility of all seven reefs to marine traffic.
  • This has greatly enhanced marine safety in the Bay of Plenty.
